The Carabinieri Canine Centre, based in Florence, was established on 8 November 1957 with the task of ensuring the training of personnel and quadrupeds in the force's Canine Service, for their use in preventive services and in judicial police, search and rescue operations.

Governed by a Colonel/Lieutenant Colonel and placed under the Inspectorate of the Specialization Institutes of the Carabinieri since 1 January 2017, the Department is responsible for the specialization in the canine sector of Instructors (military personnel in the Inspector role) and Dog Handlers (Superintendent, Corporal and Carabinieri roles) and for the training of quadrupeds for competitive activities and for use in public order services and in the search for narcotics, weapons, explosives, missing persons, cadavers, blood traces and poisons/poisoned baits.

The Centre also carries out technical-training functions for all the canine units of the territorial/forestry organisation, testing activities for new canine breeds, training methods and equipment materials, as well as training personnel of the armed forces and police, both national and foreign, who request it.
