The Flying Squad of the Italian State Police (also known as the Flying Department) is a section of the Office for General Prevention and Public Rescue of the Italian State Police, which provides emergency response 24 hours a day by calling the NUE 112 and, where this is not active, 113.
It is headed by a State Police officer and is present in every police station. The Flying Squad's main characteristic is their constant patrolling of the territory using their cars, the famous "panthers," in the classic police colors.
The cars used by the Flying Squad are specially equipped and, for their intended use, feature armor plating and bulletproof and shatterproof windshields. The side windows are not bulletproof, but they are shatterproof. Special door protection is provided, as is the characteristic bulkhead, or partition, that separates the officers from the arrested.
