Devilman is a manga series by Gō Nagai that was first published in Kōdansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from June 11, 1972 to June 24, 1973 and collected in five tankōbon volumes. The work was freely adapted into an anime television series by Toei Doga and first broadcast in Japan on TV Asahi from July 8, 1972 to April 7, 1973. It also had a more faithful OVA adaptation, a live-action film adaptation in 2004, and numerous spin-off manga.
The work achieved great success among critics and the public and, together with other works such as Mazinger Z and Mao Dante, is considered one of the author's most famous series and its anime contributed to the development and success of Japanese animation in the seventies in a decade considered its golden age. In a survey conducted by TV Asahi it was ranked 76th in the ranking of the one hundred most popular anime in Japan.
