The United States Navy Fighter Weapons School, commonly referred to as Top Gun, is the US Navy's combat school for pilots. He was born on March 3, 1969 at the Miramar Navy Air Base, California, to train pilots embarked in air combat tactics, given the lack of experience of the crews flying over Vietnam. The school was initially equipped with A-4 Skyhawk and F-5 Freedom Fighter aircraft to train the crews of the F-4 Phantom II, including the first US aces in the Vietnam War: Randy Cunningham, aka "The Duke", and Willie Driscoll. In the seventies and eighties, the F-14 Tomcat and F / A-18 Hornet aircraft were adopted, while the school instructors continued to fly the A-4s and F-5s, but also added the F-16 Fighting Falcon, to better simulate the performance of the new 4th generation Soviet fighters, the Mig-29 Fulcrum and the Su-27 Flanker.
