As the sequel to the then-highest-grossing comedy film of all time, Ghostbusters II earned $215.4 million compared to the original's $282.2 million, making it the eighth-highest-grossing film of the year.

In Italy, it was released in theaters on Thursday, December 7, 1989, distributed by Columbia Tri-Star Films Italia. On home video, the film was released simply as Ghostbusters II.
