Although the name originates with the Superman comics, Dick Grayson is the character most associated with the name. The name "Nightwing" is frequently paired with "Flamebird", another identity adopted by several DC characters.

The name was originally used in the "pre-Crisis" era by Superman when he and Jimmy Olsen served as vigilantes during his travels in the bottle city of Kandor.
