Sauron (Quenya, literally, "the Abhorred") is a character in Arda, the fictional universe created by the English writer JRR Tolkien. He is the main antagonist of The Lord of the Rings, but also appears in The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales and is mentioned in The Hobbit.


In The Lord of the Rings, Sauron is the Dark Lord of Mordor, an evil and powerful angelic being, the most powerful servant of Morgoth and creator of the One Ring found in The Hobbit by Bilbo Baggins and then inherited by Frodo Baggins. Before the events of The Lord of the Rings, Sauron was defeated by Isildur and lost the One Ring, but managed to escape death. During the War of the Ring he returns with the aim of completing his work, that is, to conquer Middle-earth and then the entire world, subjugating its inhabitants. The character is finally defeated at the end of The Lord of the Rings when Gollum destroys the One Ring, falling with it into the flames of Mount Doom, the place where the object had been forged.


Sauron is mentioned in Unfinished Tales and The Silmarillion, which add details about his origins and some events prior to the plot of The Lord of the Rings, mostly set during the First and Second Ages. In The Hobbit Sauron is referred to as "the Necromancer".
