Harley Quinn, whose real name is Harleen Frances Quinzel, is a fictional character created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm for the animated television series Batman, in which she first appears on September 11, 1992 in the episode A Little Favor of the premiere. season. In February 1994 he also appears for the first time in the comics, in Batman: Mad Love (The Batman Adventures: Mad Love) of the series The adventures of Batman. Since October 1999 it has also been integrated into the continuity of the DC Comics comics, appearing for the first time in Batman: Harley Quinn, set during the Batman: No man's land saga.

Paul Dini conceived the character after seeing actress Arleen Sorkin dressed as a clown in a sequence, set in a dream, of the soap opera The Time of Our Lives; it was then Sorkin who dubbed Harley for the first time. Conceived as the Joker's sidekick and girlfriend in the series, in the comic Crazy Love it is revealed that she met him while working as a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum asylum, where Joker was a patient. Falling in love with him, she decides to free him so that she can follow him in his criminal activities.
