The Goonies is a 1985 adventure film by Richard Donner. Chris Columbus' screenplay was based on the story of Steven Spielberg, who was also the film's producer.

The name of the film comes from a group of four boys, who grew up in a neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, called "Goon Docks"; from the name of their neighborhood, the boys call themselves with the name of 'Goonies'. In American slang, goony also means "loser" and that is why Mikey often says that he and his friends are "poor Goonies".

Produced by Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, Warner Bros. released the film on June 7, 1985 in the United States. In Italy it was released in cinemas on Friday 20 December 1985 distributed by PIC Produzione Intercontinental Cinema, subsequently re-proposed in Italian cinemas in the 4K version from 9 to 11 December 2019. [2] The film grossed $ 124 million worldwide on a budget of $ 19 million and has since become a cult film for generations of the 1980s, who remember the film as one of the essentials of the period. In 2017, the film was selected for conservation in the US National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
