The Goonies is a 1985 adventure film directed by Richard Donner. The screenplay by Chris Columbus was adapted from a story by Steven Spielberg, who also produced the film.

The film's name comes from a group of four boys who grew up in a neighborhood in Astoria, Oregon called "Goon Docks"; from the name of their neighborhood, the boys call themselves the 'Goonies'. In American slang, goony also means "loser" and that's why Mikey often says that he and his friends are "poor Goonies".

Produced by Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, Warner Bros. released the film on June 7, 1985 in the United States. In Italy it was released in theaters on Friday, December 20, 1985 distributed by PIC Produzione Intercontinentale Cinema, subsequently re-released in Italian theaters in 4K version from December 9 to 11, 2019.[2] The film grossed $124 million worldwide with a budget of $19 million and has since become a cult film for the generations of the eighties, who remember the film as one of the essential ones of the period. In 2017, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
