The Carabinieri underwater patrols are specialists trained to operate in marine and inland waters for the search and recovery of bodies, archaeological finds, weapons, and drugs, emergency rescue (floods), environmental monitoring (pollution, wrecks), and support for judicial investigations. This is also thanks to technologies such as 3D photogrammetry. They have a training center in Genoa and operational units throughout the country.

Main tasks:

Judicial Police: Recovery of crime evidence, weapons, narcotics, bodies, and submerged objects, often in collaboration with other departments.

Cultural Heritage Protection: Research, recovery, and study of underwater archaeological finds, in collaboration with the Superintendencies.

Rescue: Interventions in the event of floods, inundations or people in difficulty in the water.

Environmental Monitoring: Pollution detection, wreck monitoring (e.g. oil tankers), and marine ecosystem studies, using advanced technologies such as 3D photogrammetric surveying.

Scientific Research: Collection of biological samples and studies of the seabed.
