The pin is made of enamelled metal and measures 2.5 x 3.5 cm

The Institute of Aeronautical Military Sciences (also ISMA) is the higher education institution of the Air Force and is based in Florence in the monumental complex built in the 1930s which is located in the Cascine park.

Born from the recent transformation of the pre-existing Air Warfare School (SGA) and the Air Force Application School (SAAM) located on the same site, advanced courses for Air Force officers are held there (normal course and advanced course) which aim to increase their command capabilities and raise their cultural, technical, scientific and professional level.

Attendance at this Institute is preparatory for the officers of the Air Force in promotions from junior officers (captain) to senior officers (major) and from senior officers (colonel) to general officers. In the first case, it is called a "normal" course, while in the second case it is called a "superior" course.

These courses are similar to those of the ISSMI at inter-force level, or for example to those held by the Application School and Institute of Military Studies for Army personnel.
