The National Aerobatic Patrol (PAN), whose official name is the 313th Acrobatic Training Group, but which is commonly known as the Frecce Tricolori, is the aerobatic team of the Italian Air Force, founded in 1961 following the Air Force's decision to create a permanent group for the collective aerial acrobatics training of its pilots; its operational base is at Rivolto airport (UD).
With ten aircraft (since 1982 they have been using Aermacchi MB.339 A/PAN MLU aircraft), nine in formation and one solo, they are the largest aerobatic team in the world, and their flight program, comprising about twenty aerobatics lasting approximately half an hour, has made them famous and recognized as one of the best international aerobatic teams, performing aerobatics all year round.
The Aermacchi MB-339 is a single-engine two-seat jet aircraft for advanced training and light tactical support produced by the Italian company Aermacchi (now AleniaAermacchi) since the 1970s and mainly supplied to the Italian Air Force. The Frecce Tricolori, whose full name is the National Aerobatic Patrol, constituting the 313th Acrobatic Training Group, is the national aerobatic team (PAN) of the Italian Air Force, founded in 1961 following the Italian Air Force's decision to create a permanent group for the collective aerial acrobatics training of its pilots.
