The Navy is one of the four armed forces of the Italian Republic, together with the Italian Army, the Italian Air Force and the Carabinieri: it is entrusted with the control and conduct of naval operations in territorial and international waters. Its history begins in 1946 after the Second World War with the birth of the Republic, inheriting the structure of the Royal Navy and those naval units that the armistice conditions and the peace treaty left to Italy.
