The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine, multirole fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force.
Designed as a light fighter, it later evolved into a multi-role aircraft with a maximum altitude of about 15,000 meters. It has been chosen by the air forces of 25 nations. The F-16 is the largest Western fighter aircraft project, with over 4,500 built since its production began in 1976. Although it is no longer purchased by the U.S. Air Force, its more recent versions are still produced for the foreign market.
In 1993, General Dynamics sold its entire aircraft manufacturing business to Lockheed Corporation, which later became Lockheed Martin after its 1995 merger with Martin Marietta.
