Officially known as the Embarked Aircraft Support Group, it was established in February 1991 at the Marine Corps Air Station in Cherry Point, in the American state of North Carolina, but its genesis dates back to a few months earlier. In fact, the determination of the then Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Filippo Ruggiero, for the creation of an organizational element suitable for ensuring technical, logistical and training support for the new aircraft that the Armed Forces had chosen to embark on the Giuseppe Garibaldi dates back to 12 November 1990: at the time, the latter was called an aircraft carrier cruiser, but the growing availability of embarked aircraft and, above all, the experience gradually acquired during numerous real operations have substantiated its use as a true aircraft carrier.
