Velcro 1st Air Force Brigade Patch

The 1st Air Brigade "Special Operations" is a large unit of the Air Force, which integrates aircraft for tactical transport and airborne troops, with the task of managing the sector of special forces and armed force protection forces.

The 1st Air Brigade "Special Operations", named after Lieutenant Colonel Vezio Mezzetti, originated from the "1st Land Fighter Wing" created in Brescia on 7 May 1923 equipped with Hanriot HD.1, SPAD S.VII and SPAD S.XIII. The unit was formed by the 6th Group of Aviano, the 13th Fighter Group of Venaria Reale and the 23rd Group of Cinisello Balsamo.

During the Second World War it was stationed from 1940 to 1942 at the military airport of Trapani-Milo and was disbanded following the Badoglio Proclamation of 8 September 1943.

On 1 May 1956, the Italian Air Force reconstituted the 1st All-Weather Fighter Wing equipped with North American F-86 Sabres, which remained operational for three years, until the 23rd group and all the fighters in charge remained part of the 51st COT Air Brigade, while the 6th and 17th Groups became IT.
