BEAUTIFUL, FANTASTIC, LEGENDARY RENAULT 5 TURBO


The Renault 5 Turbo is a road car, a sports version of the Renault 5 from which it derives, it was produced by the French car manufacturer Renault between 1980 and 1985, it was designed to be used in rally competitions, in its racing evolutions it also competed and won some events of the World Rally Championship between 1981 and 1986.

The Renault 5 Turbo project was born in the late seventies, from the need of the French company to have a road car with technical characteristics that could also be competitive in world rallies, a rapidly evolving automotive discipline at that time. After having successfully used the Alpine A110 in rallies, Renault used the 5 Alpine, a more powerful version of the front-wheel drive French utility car, unsuitable for competing at a high level with the most competitive cars in the championship, namely the Escort RS, Ascona 400, Lancia Stratos, Talbot Lotus and 131 Abarth: the aim was to create a powerful and lightweight rear-wheel drive car.

Therefore, Renault, in collaboration with Bertone, created in 1978 a first prototype designed by Marcello Gandini, which was presented at the Paris Motor Show. The car differed quite radically from the normal 5 from which it derived: a more powerful central rear engine, rear-wheel drive, a two-seater passenger compartment, noticeable widening of the bodywork near the wheel arches to accommodate very wide tyres and large air intakes to dissipate internal heat.

In 1980 the production of the Turbo began, at the Heuliez body shop the bodies of the normal R5 arrived, which were modified in the floorpan and wheel arches also lengthening the wheelbase, from there sent to the Alpine workshops in Dieppe for assembly and final painting. The aesthetic appearance of a true muscle car and the high specific power of the engine earned it the epithet of Turbone among rally enthusiasts.
