In 1986 the "1.8 Turbo" was introduced, powered by a 155 HP turbocharged version of the classic 1779 cm³ twin cam. In the first version it had an interior similar to the 2.5 QV, as well as the exterior, except for the widened mudguards and a few other details.

The 1.8i turbo is the first supercharged Alfa Romeo produced by the Milanese company in large series. The racing version of the "Turbo" participated in the Italian Superturismo Championship. However, to obtain international approval in Group A it was necessary to produce a series of at least 500 units and this gave birth to the Alfa 75 "Turbo Evoluzione" version, with the engine of the normal "Turbo" modified to 1762 cm³.

The bodywork of the Turbo Evoluzione was very eye-catching (front spoiler, side skirts, matching rims and adhesive strips). The official Alfa Romeo racing team entered some 75 Turbo Evoluziones in the first season of the WTCC in 1987, racing important names in motorsport such as Alessandro Nannini, Nicola Larini and Giorgio Francia, while in the DTM of the same year a 75 was entrusted to Kurt Thiim. Many Alfa 75s participated, both in official and private guise, in the Italian Superturismo Championship between 1988 and 1992.
