In 1986, the "1.8 Turbo" was introduced, powered by a 155 hp turbocharged version of the classic 1779 cm³ twin-cam engine. In its first version, the interior was similar to the 2.5 Q.V., as was the exterior, except for widened fender flares and some other details.
The 1.8i turbo is the first supercharged Alfa Romeo produced in large series by the Milanese company. The racing version of the "Turbo" participated in the Italian Superturismo Championship. However, to obtain international homologation in Group A, it was necessary to produce a series of at least 500 units, which led to the creation of the Alfa 75 "Turbo Evoluzione" version, with the engine of the standard "Turbo" modified to 1762 cm³.
The bodywork of the Turbo Evoluzione was very striking (front spoiler, side skirts, matching wheels and adhesive stripes). Alfa Romeo's official racing team entered several 75 Turbo Evoluzione cars in the first WTCC season in 1987, featuring important motorsport names such as Alessandro Nannini, Nicola Larini, and Giorgio Francia, while in the DTM of the same year, a 75 was entrusted to Kurt Thiim. Many Alfa 75s participated, both officially and privately, in the Italian Superturismo Championship between 1988 and 1992.
