The Carabinieri NAS (Nuclei Anti-Adulteration and Health) are a specialized unit of the Carabinieri, dependent on the Carabinieri Health Protection Command in Rome. They were established in 1962 to protect public health through the surveillance of food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and workplace safety, combating fraud and illegal activities in these sectors, which are crucial to the well-being of citizens.

They carry out extensive controls on production, trade, and supply, responding to reports, investigating criminal cases, and responding to health emergencies. They have a widespread presence throughout the country and participate in European operations.

What NAS do:

Food surveillance: They check the authenticity and safety of food and drinks.

Pharmaceutical Protection: They supervise the production, distribution, and marketing of drugs and medical devices.

Health Control: They deal with public and private health, including cosmetics, performance-enhancing drugs, and animal welfare.

Workplace safety: They check safety conditions in the workplace.

Emergency Response: They respond to adverse events and health alerts, also operating at European level.
