The 4th Carabinieri Regiment on horseback was established on 1 April 1963 as part of a reorganization of the Carabinieri.

The Command of the 4th Regiment, currently run by Colonel t. ISSMI Francesco Maria Chiaravalloti, (the 23rd commander) is based at the Salvo D'Acquisto barracks in Rome, is part of the mobile and specialized units of the Arma and is employed by the 1st Mobile Brigade.
