The Carabinieri are one of the four armed forces of the Italian Republic. Established and maintained as a branch of the Italian Army, in 2000 they were elevated to the rank of Armed Force, with an independent position within the Ministry of Defense, as well as a gendarmerie corps, also performing police functions. The corps' origins date back to June 1814, based on an idea by Victor Emmanuel I of Savoy during a stay in Cagliari. It was formally established on July 13 of that same year, upon his return to Turin, with the promulgation of the Royal Charters Patent, with the aim of providing the Kingdom with a police force similar to the French Gendarmerie. Their first general was Giuseppe Thaon di Revel, appointed to the highest rank of the Carabinieri on August 13 of the same year they were founded. Their name derives from the weapon each Carabinieri officer was issued: the rifle.
