The Gulf War (2 August 1990 – 28 February 1991),[6] also called the First Gulf War in relation to the so-called Second Gulf War, was the conflict that pitted Iraq against a coalition of 35 states formed under the auspices of the UN and led by the United States, which aimed to restore the sovereignty of the small emirate of Kuwait, after it had been invaded and annexed by Iraq. It was also a media event that marked a watershed in the history of the media: it was in fact defined as "the first war of the global village".
