The Eurofighter Typhoon, whose prototype was designated EFA (European Fighter Aircraft), is a fourth-generation, twin-engine, advanced multi-role (Swing Role) military aircraft, with the primary role of interceptor and air superiority fighter. The Typhoon is designed and manufactured by a consortium of three companies, Alenia Aermacchi (merged into Leonardo, the new name of Finmeccanica since 2017), Airbus Group and BAE Systems, through a common holding company, Eurofighter GmbH, established in 1986. The project is managed by NETMA (NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency), which also acts as the primary customer.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is an extremely agile aircraft, designed for highly effective air-to-air combat against other aircraft, and has been described as second only to the American fifth-generation F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II, although the Raptor and F-35 are almost twice as expensive. Subsequently, the aircraft have benefited from several improvements, such as the ability to undertake air-to-surface strike missions and compatibility with an equally increasing number of different armaments and equipment, including the SCALP cruise missile and the RAF's Brimstone. The aircraft saw its combat debut during the 2011 military intervention in Libya with the Royal Air Force and the Italian Air Force, performing reconnaissance and ground bombing missions. The Typhoon has also assumed primary responsibility for air defence duties for most of the nations involved in the project.
