The Eurofighter Typhoon, whose prototype was designated EFA (European Fighter Aircraft), is a fourth-generation, twin-engine, multi-role (Swing Role) military aircraft, primarily serving as an interceptor and air superiority fighter. The Typhoon's design and production are the responsibility of a consortium of three companies: Alenia Aermacchi (merged into Leonardo, the new name of Finmeccanica since 2017), Airbus Group, and BAE Systems, through a joint holding company, Eurofighter GmbH, established in 1986. The project is managed by NETMA (NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency), which also acts as the primary customer.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is an extremely agile aircraft, designed for highly effective air-to-air combat against other aircraft. It has been described as second only to the American fifth-generation F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II, even though the Raptor and F-35 cost nearly twice as much. Subsequently, the aircraft have benefited from several improvements, such as the ability to undertake air-to-surface attack missions and compatibility with an equally growing number of different armaments and equipment, including the SCALP cruise missile and the RAF's Brimstone. The aircraft saw its combat debut during the 2011 military intervention in Libya with the Royal Air Force and the Italian Air Force, performing reconnaissance and ground bombing missions. The Typhoon also assumed primary responsibility for air defense functions for most of the nations involved in the project.
