The LAPD SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) is an elite unit of the Los Angeles Police Department, officially founded in 1972 to handle high-risk situations, including hostage situations, barricaded suspects, and counterterrorism.

Part of the Metropolitan Division (Platoon D), it is known for being one of the earliest and most specialized tactical units in the United States, operating in approximately 200 deployments per year.

History and Origin: Born in the late 1960s, it was formalized as a response to the need to manage complex scenarios that ordinary police could not handle.

Operational Role: Intervenes in cases of barricades, hostages, execution of high-risk warrants, VIP protection and riot control.

Structure: Under the Metropolitan Division, utilizes specialized equipment, including armored vehicles and assault weapons.

Training: LAPD SWAT officers are known for extremely rigorous training, with over 2,000 hours of training invested per operator.

Recruitment: Historically, SWAT required years of prior service in the LAPD, relying on experienced, volunteer officers.
