The Red Army was the name given to the armed forces of the Soviet Union after the disintegration of the Tsarist forces in 1917. The adjective "red" refers to the traditional color of the socialist and communist movement. The Red Army was established by decree of the Council of People's Commissars in 1918 and became the army of the USSR when the state was founded in 1922. Lev Trotsky, people's commissar for war from 1918 to 1924, is considered the founder. The Red Army, led directly by Stalin with the collaboration of capable generals, played a decisive role during the Second World War by defeating the great majority of the Wehrmacht forces of Nazi Germany during four years of violent and bloody battles and successfully concluding the conflict with the conquest of Berlin and Vienna.
