Space Invaders is a 1978 fixed-screen shooter arcade video game with an alien invasion theme developed by Tomohiro Nishikado.
It was originally produced by Taito and licensed for production in the US to Bally Technologies' Midway Games division. Although very simple by today's standards, it was one of the most influential video games of its generation: the game generated sales of $500 million in just a few years, and its release effectively marked the beginning of a period of great success for video games, later referred to as the golden age of arcade games.
Space Invaders represents one of the most well-known symbols of the entire video game medium, as well as one of the founders of the shooter genre.
