The 4th Mounted Carabinieri Regiment was established on 1 April 1963 as part of a reorganisation of the Carabinieri.

The Command of the 4th Regiment, currently led by Colonel t. ISSMI Francesco Maria Chiaravalloti, (the 23rd commander) has its headquarters at the Salvo D'Acquisto barracks in Rome, is part of the mobile and specialized units of the Force and is under the control of the 1st Mobile Brigade.
