The Carabinieri Protection and Environment (part of the Forestry, Environmental and Agri-food Units Command - CUFAA) are the specialized unit of the force for combating environmental crimes such as pollution, illegal waste disposal and illegal building in protected areas, through the Ecological Operational Units (NOE) and the NIPAAF, monitoring the territory to protect nature, biodiversity and public health, with tasks ranging from the repression of crimes to the management of protected areas and agri-food control.

Structure and Main Functions

Forestry, Environmental and Agri-food Units Command (CUFAA): This is the highest body that coordinates all environmental, forestry and agri-food police activities.

Environmental Protection and Energy Safety Command: It deals directly with combating phenomena such as pollution, illegal disposal of toxic waste and illegal building, operating through the NOE (Ecological Operational Units).

Forestry and Parks Protection Command: Manages forestry police, landscape protection, forest fire prevention, and surveillance of protected areas, together with the Regional Carabinieri Forestry Commands and the Forestry Stations.

Carabinieri Biodiversity Group: Protects biodiversity in natural areas and reserves by managing natural resources.

Carabinieri CITES Group: Applies the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

Agri-Food Protection Command: Monitors the safety and authenticity of agricultural and food products, combating fraud and protecting consumers.
