With a solemn ceremony held at the Ämari military base in Estonia, the “Baltic Eagle” mission officially ended, after four months. This mission saw the men and women of the Italian Air Force’s 36th Wing, Task Force Air (TFA), operate to ensure the defense of Baltic airspace, as part of NATO’s Enhanced Air Policing activities.

Due emphasis was also placed on the fact that Italian aircraft took to the skies fourteen times in "scramble" mode to intercept, identify, and escort out of Alliance airspace aircraft that were flying in Estonian airspace without the necessary authorizations, or without following the required identification procedures.

Since January 9, 2018, for four months the Italian detachment has ensured the integrity of NATO airspace, strengthening surveillance of the skies over the Baltic Republics – Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia – which do not possess sufficient capabilities and facilities to independently ensure an air defense fully compliant with the standards required by the Atlantic Alliance.

Four Eurofighter fighter aircraft and approximately 110 men and women of the Italian Air Force, together with two members of the Carabinieri, are deployed at the Estonian Air Force's only base, Ämari military airport, to ensure NATO's Enhanced Air Policing activities.
