The Air Squadron Command (CSA) was established on 1 March 1999, initially with headquarters at the "Francesco Baracca" airport in Rome - Centocelle, before moving on 11 April 2014 to its current location in Rome's Palazzo Aeronautica, home of the Air Force General Staff.

The CSA is the Air Force Command responsible for "training, preparing, and equipping high-quality forces with outstanding C6ISTAR-EW capabilities, continuously innovating and integrating the best operational capabilities at the joint, interagency, and multinational levels. Projecting and employing Aerospace Power in an agile, adaptive, and effective manner in operations to achieve the Air Force's mission in serving the country.

To this end, the CSA is responsible for managing the Armed Forces' peripheral Departments and Operational Units (Intermediate Commands, Brigades, Wings, Military Airports, Training Units, Flight Groups, Radar Groups) and maintaining their readiness for deployment and intervention, with the aim of guaranteeing the safety of national airspace.

The Command manages approximately 19,000 men and women, deployed in 94 Commands, Departments, and Training and/or Operational Units, distributed throughout the country. The Command's overall fleet comprises approximately 250 aircraft.

Until 2010, the task of deploying forces was devolved to the Air Force Operations Command (COFA), now abolished. The CSA also directly manages the Air Force Meteorological Service.
