The Carabinieri are one of the four Armed Forces of the Italian Republic: born and remained at the rank of Arma within the Italian Army, in 2000 it was elevated to the rank of Armed Force, with an autonomous position within the Ministry of Defense, as well as a gendarmerie corps, also having police functions. The origins of the corps date back to June 1814, from an idea of Vittorio Emanuele I of Savoy during a stay in Cagliari, and came to fruition on July 13 of that same year, once he returned to Turin, with the promulgation of the Royal Patents, with the aim of providing the Kingdom with a police force similar to the French Gendarmerie.

Their first general was Giuseppe Thaon di Revel, called to fill the highest office of the Carabinieri on August 13 of the same year of their creation. Their name derives from the weapon that each Carabiniere was equipped with: the carbine.
