The Lockheed Martin/Boeing F-22 Raptor is an American-built, stealth air superiority fighter aircraft, sometimes classified by the U.S. Department of Defense itself as an air supremacy aircraft.

Intended to enter service as the F/A-22, when the first examples were delivered to the USAF on 15 December 2005, they were redesignated F-22A.

The USAF considers the F-22A a critical element of its strike force, with performance unmatched by any aircraft of its generation. The first flight test took place on 7 September 1997, while the first production examples were delivered to Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, on 4 January 2003. The first operational unit was delivered to the 27th Fighter Squadron.

The aircraft was developed to try to counter the new threat posed by the new MiG-29 Fulcrum and Su-27 Flanker fighters.
