The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a two-seat long-range supersonic fighter-bomber, designed and manufactured at the time by the American company McDonnell Douglas in the early sixties. Having become one of the icons of American air superiority during the Vietnam War and the Cold War period during its long operational life, it is still in service with many air forces. The high flexibility of the project has allowed the evolution of the Phantom to include specific versions for aerial reconnaissance and ground attack with conventional and nuclear ammunition. Gradually replaced by more modern aircraft starting in the early nineties, it was used both in numerous reconnaissance missions and in the role of Wild Weasel during the first Gulf War. The aircraft supplied to the United States Air Force were canceled starting in 1996.
