The United States Army (often abbreviated to US Army) is the largest armed forces in the United States. The predecessor of the United States Army was the Continental Army, established on June 14, 1775, before the Declaration of Independence, to face the foreseeable war against the forces of the United Kingdom. To replace the Continental Army, disbanded after the war, Congress created the United States Army on June 3, 1784. The primary mission of the US Army is to provide the strategies and capabilities necessary for the security and national defense of the United States of America and its control is entrusted to the Department of the Army. The Department of the Army is headed by a civilian official who takes the title of Secretary of the Army, roughly equivalent to an Italian Undersecretary of State for Defense
