The Italian Army (EI) is the land component of the Italian armed forces, which also includes the Navy, the Air Force and the Carabinieri, all of which depend on the Chief of the Defence Staff and are part of the Ministry of Defence.

Born as the Royal Army in 1861 on the occasion of the Unification of Italy from the nucleus of the Sardinian Army, it took on its current name after the birth of the Italian Republic in 1946. After the transition phase of the Second World War, a period during which some units were still under Allied control, Italy's entry into NATO led to a reorganization and modernization of the Army in order to counter any possible military action by the Warsaw Pact forces. The changing international scenarios have also meant that the Italian Army has participated in various peacekeeping missions under the aegis of the UN or NATO, such as the Ibis mission in Somalia which began in 1992 as part of the UNITAF mission or the UNMIBH in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which lasted from 1995 to 2002.

With the advent of the 21st century, the Carabinieri, which was previously part of the army, assumed the rank of armed force in 2000; the subsequent enactment of law no. 226 of 23 August 2004 led to the suspension of calls for compulsory military service starting in 2005, alongside a general reform process accompanied by a progressive reduction in personnel.
