The Italian Army (EI) is the land component of the Italian armed forces, which also include the Navy, the Air Force and the Carabinieri, all dependent on the Chief of Defense and included in the Ministry of defence.

Born as Royal Army in 1861 on the occasion of the Unification of Italy from the nucleus of the Sardinian Army, it assumed its current name after the birth of the Italian Republic in 1946. After the transition phase of the second post-war period, a period during which some units were still under Allied control, Italy's entry into NATO entailed a reorganization and modernization for the Army to counter any military action by the Warsaw Pact forces. The changing scenarios at the international level have meant that the Italian Army also participated in various peacekeeping missions under the aegis of the UN or NATO, such as the Ibis mission in Somalia which began in 1992 as part of the UNITAF mission or the UNMIBH in Bosnia. and Herzegovina, which lasted from 1995 to 2002.

With the advent of the twenty-first century, the Carabinieri, which was previously part of the army, in 2000 assumed the rank of armed force; the issuing of the law of 23 August 2004, n. 226 led to the suspension of compulsory military service calls starting from 2005 alongside a general reform process accompanied by a gradual reduction in personnel.
